4th Annual Harry Potter Festival in Chestertown – October 6 & 7, 2017

The 4th Annual Chestertown Harry Potter Festival has just come to a conclusion. This year’s festival used the 3rd book in the series, The Prisoner of Azkaban, as its theme. Thousands of wizards of all ages and a few muggles too, swooped into the same Eastern Shore town. They came by broomsticks, floo powder, portkey, apparition, and the classic muggle transportation, automobiles.

I haven’t heard the estimate on the amount of visitors that came to Chestertown on the first weekend of October, but it was sure to have increased the population by a couple of thousand.

The Festival opened on Friday, October 6th 2017. The first Friday of the month is already full of activities for residents and visitors, and was made even more so with in influx of people coming to the festival. The Garfield Center for the Arts, which assists greatly and is a major benefactor of the festival, held the opening kick-off party. During this Kick-off event there was a Stump the Hermione trivial contest, a costume contest (three categories, kids under 12, teen and adult, and group), and performances. The performances included a short skit revealing Sirius Black , and music by Brian Malfoy, of Draco and the Malfoys, the Bibbering Humdingers and Ashley Hamel. Each of these artist performed music based on the Potterverse termed Wizard Rock.

On Saturday October 7th, the party hit the street of Chestertown. Many of the local stores turned their establishments into places of the Wizarding World. They also had clues for the scavenger hunt. Fountain Park became an outdoor marketplace.

Brian Malfoy and the Bibbering Humdingers performed another set of songs. Some were the same as heard at the kick-off party, but they did change their sets slightly. As Kirsten and Scott Vaughan, the husband and wife team behind the Bibbering Humdingers, told me they adjust their set to the crowd. Some of their songs are not directly Harry Potter related, but delve into other fantasy worlds. One of the selections played during the festival is titled “Raised by Nerds”.

Kent School, a Kent County Private School, turned an old bank building into Gringotts Wizarding Bank. The bank is run by goblins and the school had students and volunteers dressed as goblins to help the visitors with their banking needs at Gringotts.

Chestertown’s Juneteenth Celebration at Sumner Hall – June 18, 2016

June 19, 2016

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday began in Galveston, Texas in 1866 marking the first year anniversary of Major General Gordon Granger landing at Galveston with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free, over two years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. More on the history if Juneteenth can be learned at www.juneteenth.com/history.htm

In Chestertown, Maryland Sumner Hall conducted a Juneteenth Celebration. Along with a wreath laying at the monument in Memorial Park honoring the African-American soldiers from Kent County who fought in the Civil War it was a day of Live Music, Gospel and Jazz.

Sumner Hall is one of only two African-American Grand Army of the Republic Posts still remaining in the United States. After years of neglect the hall was purchased, renovated and is now used as a museum, community center, performance space, and gallery. The hall completed a renovation and had their official opening celebration two years ago during Juneteenth. After the grand opening they decided to continue with a Juneteenth celebration each year. So even though this is the third year for the celebration it is officially the 2nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration.

The celebration began with the arrival of the Buffalo Soldiers Moto Cycle Club, MC, Troup 1, Delaware. The club honors the contribution of the Buffalo Soldiers, the first African-American peacetime regiments of the US Army which served from 1886 when enacted by congress until 1948 when President Truman issued an Executive Order that integrated the US armed forces.

Being lead by drummers from the Kent County Middle School Band, under the direction of Band teacher Leon Frison, the Buffalo Soldiers Cavalry Scouts matched from Sumner Hall to Memorial Park in Chestertown to lay a wreath at the monument for Kent County’s African- American Soldiers who fought in the Civil War.

Upon return back to Sumner Hall it was time to officially open the festivities beginning with the reading of a Proclamation from the Town of Chestertown, read by Council Member Linda Kuiper, honoring Juneteenth and recognition of the Board, Friends and Volunteers of the Sumner Hall.

This was followed with a short speech by Cameron McCoy, a recent graduate of Easton High School where he was SGA President and has been honored for academic achievement as Maryland Scholar and Scholar with Distinction. His speech empathized that there is still much hate in the US and in the world. We should think of these recent attacks (Orlando, South Caroline etc) were done by a “lost man fueled by hate.” And when hate comes knocking at your door, how will you answer it?

The rest of the day was filled with music; Gospel with Pilgrim Travelers and the New Gospelites, smooth jazz with the Bratcher Project and even a little folk with Andre Sisco and his friend David Jones, and finally we got to the amazing Twiddy house we rented for the weekend.

Photos: Betterton, MD Appreciation Day – August 1, 2015

August 3, 2015

It was a warm day, alright one could call it hot. But those who came to Betterton MD on August 1, 2015 for their Appreciation Day had a good time.

Beginning in the late 19th Century and the first half of the 20th, Betterton was a big resort town. Hotels were full of visitors from Philadelphia and Baltimore who came to the town via steamship passenger ferries. Their was a hug amusement complex and the beach on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Sassafras River.

Although many of the hotels have been replaced by condos, the memory is still there for many as well as their families hearing tales of the good times had at the Chesapeake Beach Resort Town.
